Raiders drop another to Bengals

This was the fourth meeting between the Raiders and the Bengals, and once again the Bengals came out on the winning end. It was a much better showing for the Raiders compared to the last time these two team met when the Raiders were handed a 22-6 lose. Despite playing with only 13 runner the Raiders showed more moxey in this game than the previous match up. They grinded and put all the effort they had into the game. Raiders goaltender Alexander Tomic stood tall in net stopping 53 of the 66 shots he faced. The shortstaffed Raiders took an early 1-0 lead on Jack Millar's (3) goal with Joey Young (15) and Josh Calder (1) picking up the assists. Bengals evened the score, but Hunter Hidalgo (7) gave Welland back the lead at 2-1, unassisted.  The Bengals add a couple before the period ended to take a 3-2 lead. The second period was all Bengals as they outscored the raiders 6-0 in the period to take an 9-2 lead. The long change caught up to the shortstaffed Raiders.

In the third, a tired crew battles hard, Joey Young (19) scored Welland's lone goal in the third with the Millar Brother, Owen (23) and Jack (17) picking up the assists. The Bengals added four in the period to take the win 13-3. A gallant effort put on by the 13 runners and goaltender Alexander Tomic.

Raiders, a missed opportunity

The Welland Raiders missed an opportunity to get into the win column for the second time when they travelled to Point Edward to take on the struggling far west division Pacers. The game did not start well for the Raiders, as they struggle to find their legs, and were behind 5-0 by the midway point of the first period. Raiders finally got onthe board on Joey Young's (17) goal with Liam Legault (9) picking up the assist. Two more goals by the Pacers made it 7-1. Joey Young (18) got one back for the Raiders to make it a 7-2 Pacer lead after one period, Kaylen Bennett (13) picked up the lone assist.

The Raiders managed to cut the Pacers lead to 7-5 with goals by Josh Calder (1) assisted by Kaylen Bennett (14) and Liam Legault (10); Cohen Visheau (4) scored assisted by Hunter Hidalgo (10) and Jack Millar (16); Welland's fifth goal of the game scored byLiam STickland (4), unassisted. Just as the Raider got themselves back in the game a little bit of a collapse allowed the Pacer to score three to make it 10-5 Point Edward. Welland's Hunter Hidalgo (6) scored one before the period ended to make it 10-6 Pacers, Owen Millar (22) and Cohen Visheau (100 picked up the assists on Millar's goal

Welland fell behind 11-6 early in the third but managed to claw back with goals by Kaylen Bennett (27) assisted by Alex Fois (2) and Hunter Hidalgo (11) making it 11-7. Cohen Visheau (5) from Joey Young (14) made it an 11-8 game and then Braydan Stearns (15) got the Raiders back to within two at 11-9 with Cohen Visheau (11) and Max Arcuri (7) picking up the assists. But the was as close as the Raiders would get as the Pacers added a couple more late to make the final 13-9 for the Pacers.

Young Raiders Show Their Grit in First Win as Jr. B Squad

WELLAND — After a heartbreaking 13-12 overtime loss the night before, the Welland Jr. B Raiders weren’t interested in moral victories—they wanted the real thing. And on Saturday night, they got it.

Fueled by hunger and heart, the young Raiders earned their first win as a Jr. B franchise with an impressive 11-8 victory over the Wallaceburg Red Devils. It was a game defined by hustle, grit, and a collective determination to take the next step forward in their development.

“The guys really wanted this game,” said Raiders head coach Roman Hill. “After the OT loss yesterday they had a hunger to get the job done tonight. Whenever you have a chance to win it makes you want the next one more. These guys just dug in and did their job tonight. From top to bottom, everyone played with a little swagger—I’m proud of these guys.”

The swagger was evident early and often.

Welland came out with energy and precision, storming to a 9-5 lead heading into the third period. They were relentless on both ends of the floor, pushing transition, capitalizing on opportunities, and locking things down defensively when it mattered most.

The offensive spark came from a pair of breakout performances. In his debut game wearing Raiders colours, Colton Hornquist announced his presence with authority—racking up 2 goals and 4 assists. Rookie sensation Kalen Bennett Jr. was electric, piling up 4 goals and 3 helpers for a dazzling 7-point night. Owen Millar chipped in with 1 goal and 5 assists, while Joey Young tallied 2 goals and an assist. Hunter Hidalgo and Braydan Stearns added a goal each to round out a balanced and potent attack.

But this win wasn’t just about the scoreboard.

It was about execution, effort, and a defense that finally clicked. The Raiders' back-end played their most complete game of the season. Led by a strong showing from goalie Kiaus Lalonde—who turned aside 30 of 38 shots—the defense showed structure and toughness.

“Everyone did their job tonight,” Hill emphasized. “You look on the D side, Boater (Lucas Longboat), Cookie (Jacob Cook), Brophy (Joshua Brophy), Benny (Riley Benoit), Barts (Ben Bartley), Tower (Alex Fois), Jaxx (Jaxxon Long), Wade Knutsen, James Oberle and Kiaus. They really stepped up and played with some grit and heart. Brax (Braxton Bibeau), Jack Millar, Legs (Liam Legault)—all guys who just dug in. Again, I’m just happy for the squad.”

For a team that’s still learning how to win, Saturday night was more than just a tally in the “W” column—it was a statement. A message that this young squad isn’t just out to participate—they’re out to compete.

They’ll need to carry that same mindset into their next challenge, a Friday night matchup on the road against the always-tough Six Nations Rebels. But for now, the Raiders will soak it in, knowing how far they’ve come and how much fight they still have left.

The road won’t be easy. But with performances like this—and a locker room full of belief—the Raiders have proven that while they may be young, their hearts are fully in the game

RAIDERS SHOW GRIT IN OVERTIME HEARTBREAK

Welland, Ont.

It was a night of resilience and progression at the Welland Main Arena on Saturday, May 17, as the Welland Jr. B Raiders looked to bounce back from a tough 12-5 loss to the Hamilton Bengals just two nights prior. Though the scoreboard once again favoured the Bengals — this time 13-12 in an overtime thriller — the Raiders left the floor with heads held high and plenty to build on.

For the first time this season, the Raiders’ offense cracked double digits, a sign that the young squad is beginning to find its rhythm. The team showed flashes of cohesion, offensive chemistry, and unshakable heart in front of a supportive hometown crowd.

“It’s been a focus to try and get these young offensive guys some confidence,” said Raiders head coach Hill after the game. “I feel like we haven’t been able to settle in with how much our unit has shifted. Tonight felt good to see them get some rhythm going and start to open up for each other.”

Indeed, the Raiders’ attack was led by impressive performances from Kalen Bennett Jr and Braydan Stearns, who each notched hat tricks and added an assist apiece. Owen Millar served as the offensive engine, tallying a goal and four helpers, showing poise and leadership in a high-pressure matchup.

“The message all season has been trust and ‘how can I be better,’” Hill added. “Tonight we showed what we can do better and we just need to build from there. Our defense and our goalie stepped up and helped us stay in the game and the offense showed some poise and gave us a chance.”

The Raiders matched the Bengals stride for stride throughout regulation and into the extra frame, showing the kind of grit that hasn’t always translated on the scoreboard in earlier games. While the loss stings, it’s clear this was a step forward in the young team’s journey.

They won’t have long to dwell on the result. The Jr. B Raiders return to action Sunday night as they host the Wallaceburg Red Devils at 7 p.m. back at the Welland Main Arena. With momentum building and belief growing in the locker room, the Raiders are poised to continue their climb.

One goal at a time.

Raiders Push Early but Fall Late in Learning Experience Against Athletics

The Welland Jr. B Raiders delivered a spirited performance on home floor Thursday night, showing early plenty of potential. Despite building a 4-2 lead after the first period, the young squad couldn’t hold off a late surge by the St. Catharines Jr. B Athletics, ultimately dropping a 13-9 decision in a game that highlighted both their promise and growing pains.

Welland came out of the gate with energy and purpose, fueled by a youthful core determined to prove themselves. The Raiders jumped to a 4-2 lead after the opening frame, looking poised to control the pace of the game. But lacrosse, like all sports, demands 60 minutes of focus—and the middle frame saw the Athletics claw back, tying the game 6-6 after 40 minutes.

It was the third period where things truly got away from the Raiders, as St. Catharines went on a decisive run, capitalizing on a moment of adversity. Down 8-6, Welland lost starting goaltender Kiaus Lalonde for eight crucial minutes after he took a direct shot to the facemask. At the time of his exit, Lalonde was in the midst of a stellar performance, having stopped 52 of 61 shots and giving his team every chance to win.

“Kiaus was having a very strong game,” said head coach Roman Hill. “I know he wanted to rebound badly after a tough start for the team on Sunday, and he came out today ready to go… It’s unfortunate that he had to exit because that puts your backup, Alex, in a very tough position.”

Despite the late-game struggles, the Raiders had their share of bright spots, chief among them rookie forward Kalen Bennett Jr. The dynamic first-year player notched his first career hat trick and recorded a career-best six-point performance, showing the kind of offensive upside that Welland hopes to harness as the season progresses.

“We have a team full of young players and hitting milestones is a big part of player development,” Hill added. “Kalen played with confidence and was really engaged… When you start getting guys like Lucas Longboat contributing in the transition game, that opens things up.”

Welland may still be in the early stages of building something sustainable, but performances like these—even in defeat—show glimpses of what this group could become. The growing pains are real, but so is the potential.

The Raiders now set their sights on Saturday’s road matchup in Owen Sound, where they’ll look to build off Thursday night’s strong individual efforts and turn them into a more complete team performance.

RAIDERS SEARCH FOR BALANCE

Raiders Still Searching for Balance, But Foundation Is Taking Shape

Progress doesn’t always show up on the scoreboard — and for the Welland Jr. B Raiders, that’s been the story of their season so far.

Saturday’s 15-4 loss to the defending Canadian champions may look like another tough result, but dig a little deeper and you’ll find glimmers of growth, especially from a team still trying to build an identity.

“We still aren’t playing physical enough or getting into those ‘dirty’ areas,” said Head Coach Hill after the game. “Guys aren’t rolling up their sleeves and digging in. One thing that concerns me is the amount of shots and second chances we’re allowing. We’re not supporting our goalies enough — and you can see it in the shots per game.”

Hill has every reason to be frustrated with the defensive breakdowns. The Raiders found themselves in a 6-1 hole early, having allowed 22 shots in the first 10 minutes. Despite the score, veteran goaltender Kiaus stood tall amid heavy pressure, keeping the game from getting completely out of hand in the early going.

“Kiaus has been solid for us,” said Hill. “It’s not a goalie problem — it’s a problem for the goalies. We’re hanging them out to dry far too often.”

In search of a spark and to give Kiaus a chance to reset, Hill made the decision to turn to rookie netminder Alexander Tomic. While the switch didn’t slow the barrage — Tomic faced 63 shots over the remaining 48 minutes — the young goaltender stepped up with poise beyond his years.

“It’s never easy to make that call,” said Hill. “But Alex took the moment and stood tall, even with our defense bleeding. At this point, I’m just trying to find what’s going to work. I’d much rather it be the guys in front of our goalie making the impact — because this can be a confidence breaker back there.”

Still, the Raiders showed grit in the second period, tying the frame 2-2 with the league’s toughest opponent. It’s a small win, but for a team trying to take steps forward, it’s something to build on.

“That second period was a bright spot,” Hill noted. “It’s been one of our biggest issues, so to battle even with the defending champs shows our guys are listening, learning, and fighting.”

Offensively, the Raiders still need to find ways to manufacture goals — and that means embracing the blue-collar work of battling in front of the crease, chasing rebounds, and creating high-percentage looks.

“We’ve got to get to work and get into those tough areas,” said Hill. “Putting points on the board starts with effort, and that’s something we can control.”

The Raiders will look to turn lessons into results this Wednesday at home against the St. Catharines Jr. B Athletics. Faceoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the Welland Arena.

There are no shortcuts in a rebuild. But for Welland, the signs of a brighter future are starting to emerge — one tough lesson, and one hard-fought shift, at a time.

Guelph, ON – May 2, 2025

THERE IS NO QUIT IN RAIDERS

There’s no quit in the Welland Jr B Raiders—just ask anyone who stood behind their bench last night.

The scoreboard may have shown a 14-4 loss to the Guelph Regals at the Victoria Road Rec Centre, but that final tally hardly tells the full story of a young Raiders squad grinding through early-season adversity.

Short-benched and injury-riddled, the Raiders entered Thursday night’s Ontario Jr B Lacrosse League clash with optimism rooted in effort and growth rather than standings and stats. With several key left-side players still away at school and two more sidelined due to injury, the Raiders were already in tough before two more players left the game banged up.

Still, the fight never left the floor.

“These early games are certainly battles,” said head coach Hill following the game. “In years past we’ve always had trouble just having 18 runners. This year, we’ve got a deeper roster to pull from, but now it’s about getting these first-year guys some reps and experience.”

And reps they’re getting.

The Raiders’ roster is stacked with rookies—eager, energetic, and still adjusting to the fast pace of Jr B lacrosse. What they may lack in polish, they more than make up for in work ethic. That energy was apparent even as the Regals pulled away in the second and third periods.

Coach Hill and staff came into the night with a clear goal: clean up the team’s historically rough second periods. It’s been a sore spot in recent seasons, but last night showed signs of progress.

“I’m happy to say the message was received,” said Hill. “Efforts to help our goalie and defensive unit were definitely heard. Still not perfect, but we’re making strides.”

Despite the lopsided final score, the bench stayed loud and engaged from opening whistle to final buzzer—something Hill emphasized as key to the development of his group.

“These losses feel completely different than in years past,” he said. “I was extremely proud of our players tonight. They showed no quit. Most are still new and trying to find their confidence, so we’re really focusing on keeping them locked in. ‘What can I do to be better? What can I do to help my team?’ That’s what we’re trying to instill.”

That culture of accountability and resilience is already showing signs of taking root, and fans won't have to wait long to see it tested again.

The Raiders return to home floor this Sunday, May 4th at the Welland Main Arena for a matinee showdown with the always-tough Elora Hawks. Game time is 3 p.m.

May the fourth be with them.

Raiders Show Progress Despite Loss to Cambridge

WELLAND — The Welland Jr. B Raiders returned to home floor last night, hosting the Cambridge Highlanders in Ontario Jr. B Lacrosse League action. Although the Raiders ultimately fell 12-4 to Cambridge, the young squad showed significant strides after a tough 17-1 loss to the St. Catharines Athletics earlier in the week.

“Although it wasn’t a win, this was a character-building loss,” said Raiders head coach Roman Hill. “We didn’t feel at any point that the game was completely out of reach, and that’s the mindset we need to carry forward with us. We have to want it, we have to fight for it.”

Despite the scoreboard, there were plenty of positives for the Raiders. The group, featuring many fresh faces, is beginning to find its chemistry both on and off the floor.

“I believe a lot of the young players can see what is in front of them. They are starting to gel, starting to build bonds, and view this team as a family,” Hill added.

The Raiders will look to continue their development on Sunday, April 27, when they travel to London to face the Blue Devils at Nichols Arena. Game time is 4 p.m.

Raiders Take Opening Night Loss in Stride, Eyes Set on Home Opener

Thorold, ON – The Welland Jr. B Raiders officially kicked off their 2025 campaign on Wednesday night but were dealt a tough lesson in their season opener, falling 17-1 to the St. Catharines Jr. B A’s.
For the majority of the Raiders' roster, it was their first experience at the Junior B level, with 10 rookies and 7 sophomores making up a youthful and promising core. Head Coach Roman Hill acknowledged the growing pains that come with such a fresh-faced lineup.
“It was definitely a welcome-to-the-league moment for some of these young men,” said Hill postgame. “Sometimes you have to take your lumps and learn from the mistakes.”
Despite the lopsided scoreline, Coach Hill found positives in his team's opening period effort. “For the 1st period, you could see where the potential lays within this team,” he said. “Take away the mental mistakes and self-inflicted wounds, and we have a much better start.”
Hill emphasized the importance of development and maturity, both for players and coaching staff, as the team works through the early stages of the season. “We as coaches need to do a better job of being on top of the things we can control. I will take accountability and ensure we support this group better.”
The Raiders will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their home opener this Saturday, April 26, against the Cambridge Highlanders at the Welland Main Arena. Ball drop is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

SUNDAYS TRYOUT CANCELLED

Because of the Severe Weather Warning for the area on Sunday, tryouts scheduled for the Haig Bowl from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday Feb 26 have been cancelled, and will be added later. Next tryout scheduled will be Sunday February 23 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. If you have not filled out the 2025 registration on the Teams web page, please do so, this automatically adds your email address to our system and allows us to send out mass emails rather than individually, and keep you informed on additions or cancellations. Make sure you click on the Tryout link in the 2025 Registration.

Thanks
